Ireneusz Kaługa Laureate of the Golden Wings Award by Tygodnik Siedlecki, made an extraordinary achievement. He became the first person in the world to mount a camera on the wings of a stork, capturing photos during migration and sending them to Irka Kaługa. Photographer on wings – a stork sending photos from the sky! This unprecedented event! A stork named Photographer became the first bird in the world equipped with a special transmitter and a camera to document its journey from Europe to Africa. The photos taken by him are sent directly to Irek Kaługa, a nature enthusiast and stork researcher who installed this device on the birds back. Its an amazing feeling to receive photos from the back of a flying stork. Its a view that no one has ever seen before, says the ecologist. Photographer is an adult stork who spent a long time in a rehabilitation center at Warsaw Zoo. Surviving for several years increased his chances of a safe migration compared to younger individuals, whose mortality in the first year can reach up to 80%. We were offered to test modern transmitters. One of them had a built-in camera – something no one had tried before, Irek explains. Postcards from Africa Photographer embarked on his journey, and we almost immediately started receiving incredible photos. The first photos arrived when the stork was nesting in Poland. They were so detailed that you could read house numbers on buildings in the background, recalls the naturalist. Then Photographer traveled hundreds of kilometers along the traditional route through Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Egypt, eventually reaching Sudan. Since September 1, we had no news from him. Storks in Sudan often lose signal, so it was expected, the researcher explains. After several weeks, Photographer contacted us again and sent another series of photos. It was something extraordinary – we saw white storks foraging in the marsh and over 60 black storks in the trees. Such a scene has never been captured before, Kaługa exclaims. The stork continued his journey through Chad, South Sudan, and Kenya until reaching Tanzania. Thanks to these photos, we are literally traveling with Photographer. We can see how his world looks, what he sees while flying in a flock, and what rest looks like on the African savannah, says the researcher.
